The catalogue Other People Think – A Selection from the Wemhöner Collection by Marta Herford accompanies the first presentation of entrepreneur Heiner Wemhöner’s private collection of contemporary art in his hometown. Curated by Director Kathleen Rahn, the exhibition features around 70 works by 25 artists and highlights the dialogical relationships between the works themselves and with the museum’s architecture designed by Frank Gehry. Across various media, the exhibition addresses political settings, questions of body and identity, and the expressive power of gestural forms of expression. In addition to a general contextualization of the collection by the curator, Doris Krystof reflects on the handling of African cultural assets and the colonial legacy through Isaac Julien’s film installation Once Again … (Statues Never Die) – while also shedding new light on the practice of collecting itself.
