This publication was produced to accompany the exhibition Playtime at PalaisPopulaire, curated by Philipp Bollmann and co-organized with Deutsche Bank AG and Palais Populaire.

In 2013, five years after the profound global banking and financial crisis, Isaac Julien (*1960) presented his film Playtime. In this work, Julien addresses a fundamental question: How can capital be visualized? Through the stories of six protagonists, who are individuals active in the art world and the financial sector, Isaac Julien found narrative images that speak of the global interconnectedness of capital. In them, macroscopic and microscopic perspectives are dialectically linked.

Palais Populaire and Sammlung Wemhöner jointly present Playtime to re-examine this work from today’s perspective – a work that is more relevant than ever, as capital plays a role in all political, social, and societal spheres and influences the lives of almost everyone on this planet.
